Loyola University Chicago is an independent, Catholic and urban university with a Jesuit heritage, emphasizing the development of the intellectual, social and moral values, and character of its students. Dedicated to higher education and health care, the university has national, regional and international influence.

The Undergraduate Studies Catalog provides students with information regarding the academic policies and regulations of the university, the university Core Curriculum, and the policies and programs of the undergraduate schools and college that make up Loyola's undergraduate programs.

The undergraduate studies catalog is issued annually, prior to the start of the Fall Term of the new academic year.  Undergraduate students are governed by the catalog issued for the academic year in which they enter Loyola University Chicago.

Student Responsibilities

It is the personal responsibility of each student to actively know all the pertinent regulations set forth in the Undergraduate Studies Catalog.

Within the various undergraduate schools and college, the only official interpretation or modification of academic regulations are those which are made in writing by the Dean of the school or college of which the student is a member.

This catalog is published for informational purposes. Although every attempt is made to ensure accurate information, the information provided should be used only as a reference and planning tool. While students are governed by the catalog that is in effect in the academic year in which they enter, students should not assume that the catalog is a contract between Loyola University Chicago and students. The Board of Trustees of Loyola University Chicago reserves the right to change, at any time, without notice, graduation requirements, fees and other charges, curriculum, course structure and content, and other such matters as may be within its control, notwithstanding any information set forth in this catalog. Students should always consult with their college advisors to confirm all information.

This Academic Catalog lists the approved courses for the plan of study during the published Catalog Year. A current Loyola student's degree requirements are based on when the major or minor was officially declared, and may differ from what is shown in this document. Loyola students should work with their academic advisor and refer to My Academic Requirements in LOCUS for their individualized lists of approved courses. Final confirmation of all degree requirements is subject to department, school, and university approval.

Confidentiality of Education Records

Loyola University Chicago complies with the provisions of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 ("FERPA") when releasing personally identifiable information concerning students. FERPA stipulates that a student's education record is confidential information and must not be released without prior written consent of the student. FERPA does permit the release of "Directory Information." Directory information is information which would not generally be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed. Students have the right to withhold "directory Information." However, the student should consider the consequences of such a request as Loyola University Chicago will honor the request, until removed in writing by the student. Loyola University Chicago has determined directory information to consist of a student's:

  • Name
  • Address(es) and telephone number
  • University e-mail address
  • Photograph
  • Major and minor field(s) of study, including the college, division, department, institute or program in which the student is enrolled
  • Dates of attendance
  • Grade level (Such as freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate level)
  • Enrollment status (Undergraduate or graduate, full-time or part-time)
  • Date of graduation
  • Degree(s) received
  • Honors or awards received, including selection to a Dean's list or honorary organization
  • Participation in officially recognized activities or sports
  • Weight and height of members of athletic teams

The University reserves the right to refuse to admit or readmit any student at any time should it be deemed necessary in the interest of the student or of the University to do so and to require the withdrawal of any student at any time who fails to give satisfactory evidence of academic ability, earnestness of purpose, or active cooperation in all requirements for acceptable scholarship.
