Global Studies (BA)
The BA in Global Studies (GLST) gives students the opportunity to examine global issues from the perspective of several academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. While developing an individual program, a global studies student may choose from a very wide range of courses drawn from units across the university.
Related Programs
Curriculum
The curriculum leading to a BA in Global Studies consists of thirty-three semester hours of coursework (eleven courses) and the fulfillment of an intermediate-level foreign language proficiency requirement. Courses completed to satisfy the language requirement do not count toward the thirty-three semester hours of coursework.
The College of Arts and Sciences requires that a minimum of twenty-one credit hours (seven courses) of any major, including the Global Studies Major, be unique to that major and hence may not count toward any other major or minor. The Global Studies Program allows up to nine credit hours (three courses) to fulfill the requirements of the Global Studies Major and any other individual major or minor. Therefore, students may count up to four classes total toward the BA in Global Studies and all other declared majors/minors.
The Global Studies Major requires students to complete the following core courses in addition to their Global Studies elective courses.
| Code | Title | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| GLST 101 | Introduction to Global Studies | 3 |
| ANTH 100 | Globalization and Local Cultures | 3 |
| PLSC 102 | International Relations in an Age of Globalization | 3 |
| Select at least two of the below 300-level courses. You may take up to four additional GLST 300-level courses as electives. Hence, up to six courses total from the below list can count for the Global Studies Major. | 6 | |

Elective Courses
Majors have five required courses (ANTH 100, GLST 101, PLSC 102, and two 300-level GLST courses) and six electives of their choosing. In addition to the 300-level GLST courses listed above, numerous courses based in departments and schools across the university are tagged with the Global Studies Program and may count as electives in the Global Studies Major. Please consult LOCUS using the interdisciplinary search option in the “Undergraduate CORE/Interdisciplinary” drop-down menu or the semester-specific listing on the Global Studies website to see which electives are being offered in a given semester.
Global Studies majors must take elective courses in the major from at least two units (school, department, or program). Courses taken abroad may be substituted for LUC Global Studies courses only if they are pre-approved as GLST major electives by the director of Global Studies.
Many departmentally-based courses tagged with the Global Studies Program are not offered very often. If you want to know when a particular tagged course is going to be offered next, please check with the course's home department. The Global Studies Program does not control the scheduling of tagged elective courses.
Global Studies focuses on the world outside of the United States since around 1850 CE. Some LUC courses relevant to the geographic and thematic areas of focus named below may not appear on our lists, especially if they are "topics" courses. Please check with the director of the Global Studies Program if you have any questions about a course not listed below that you would like to count toward your Global Studies major.
Geographic and Thematic Areas of Concentration in the Global Studies Major
Students majoring in Global Studies are not required to choose an area of concentration but are encouraged to do so. Students may, for example, focus four or more of their major elective courses on one world area, preferably in alignment with their modern foreign language studies: Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, or the Middle East. Alternatively, students may choose to complete a cluster of four or more courses from the thematic areas listed below or create their own thematic area in consultation with the program director. Relevant courses taken abroad may also count toward a given thematic area.

Portfolio Requirement
All graduating global studies majors must submit during their final semester a portfolio. These portfolios are not graded at the level of the individual student but are used instead as part of an annual assessment of the program. Graduating students will receive an email about two months prior to graduation requesting the portfolio and detailing what students should include in it. Students are required to submit the following:
- a personal statement (300-500 words) describing the most important knowledge and skills gained as a global studies major as well as the courses and experiences you have found most helpful;
- the inclusion of a statement (300-500 words) on the strengths and weaknesses of the Global Studies Program itself as you see it as well as any recommendations you would like to see made to the program; and
- depending on the year, we might request copies of essays completed for a Global Studies course, a short response to an essay prompt, or a similar kind of product. The details of what is needed will be communicated in the email sent prior to graduation.
December graduates must submit their portfolios by December 10th of their final semester; May graduates must submit their portfolios by April 30th of their final semester. Please note that portfolio submission prior to graduation is a requirement that is separate from all other Global Studies Major requirements.
Language Requirement
The language requirement for the major in global studies may be satisfied in any of the following ways:
- Successful completion with a grade of "C" or better of a 104-level or higher course in one of the accepted modern, foreign languages offered by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.
- Completion of a language proficiency examination or the equivalent, administered by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, demonstrating proficiency at the 104 level or higher of a modern, foreign language. Please email CASLanguageTesting@luc.edu for information about language proficiency testing.
- Determination by the director of the Global Studies Program, in consultation with appropriate specialists, that a student has at least a 104-level reading and writing proficiency in a language that is not taught or tested at Loyola.
Please note that English, American Sign Language, computer languages, and other US-based languages do not satisfy this requirement.
Suggested Sequence of Courses
The below sequence of courses is meant to be used as a suggested path for completing coursework. An individual student’s completion of requirements depends on course offerings in a given term as well as the start term for a major or graduate study.
