Undergraduate Paper Contest

Three prizes are awarded annually to encourage publication-level work in the fields of theology and religious studies.

The Karl Rahner Award for Excellence in Theological Studies

Awarded to the Theology Major with the highest GPA in their Major and the highest GPA in their Academic Program, overall.

The Ninian Smart Award for Excellence in Religious Studies

Awarded to the Religious Studies Major with the highest GPA in their Major and the highest GPA in their Academic Program, overall.

First Honors

First Honors in Theology is awarded to students with an overall GPA of 3.5 and a GPA of 3.7 in their theology courses.

Second Honors

Second Honors in Theology is awarded to students with an overall GPA of 3.3 and a GPA of 3.5 in their theology courses.

Departmental Distinction

Graduation with Departmental Distinction is awarded to students who qualify for First Honors and who have taken two additional Theology courses at the 300 level beyond the requirements for the major.

Certificate of Merit

This award is given to a graduating senior with an average above 3.5 in the Theology major. No minimum overall GPA is specified.
