Honors and the Core

100-level Honors

Upon successful completion of HONR 101 Western Traditions - Antiquity to the Middle Ages and HONR D101 Developments Western Thought I Discussion, the following Core requirements are waived:  Philosophical Knowledge and Inquiry Tier 1 (3 credit hours); Theological & Religious Knowledge and Inquiry Tier 1 (3 credit hours).

Upon successful completion of HONR 102 Western Traditions-Renaissance to Modernity and HONR D102 Developments in Historical Western Thought II Discussion, the following Core requirements are waived:  Artistic Knowledge and Inquiry (3 credit hours); Literary Knowledge and Inquiry Tier 1 (3 credit hours).

Upon successful completion of HONR 101, HONR D101, HONR 102, and HONR D102, the requirement for College Writing Seminar, UCWR 110 Writing Responsibly, is waived.  HONR D102 is a Writing Intensive course.

200-level Honors Courses

Honors students who successfully complete all four 200-level Honors requirements, regardless of the letters attached to the course numbers, will receive four Core waivers as follows:

  • Historical Knowledge and Inquiry Tier 2
  • Societal and Cultural Knowledge and Inquiry Tier 2
  • Literary Knowledge and Inquiry Tier 2
  • Scientific Knowledge and Inquiry Tier 2

Please note: The letters (A, B, C, D) are irrelevant.  You must complete ALL FOUR 200-level Honors course requirements before the four Core course waivers are applied.  Students who leave the Honors program before completing their Honors 200-level requirements must appeal to the Director of Core Curriculum (Core@luc.edu) to determine whether any of their 200-level Honors courses can lead to Core waivers.

Education students in Honors are not required to take HONR 203; and Engineering students in Honors are not required to take HONR 204.

Honors students (entering Fall 2016 and later) can take a 200 or 300 level history course to fulfill their History Tier 1 requirement. To utilize this exception, the HIST course must be taken at a Loyola University Chicago campus and cannot be a transfer credit of any kind. Transfer credit for HIST 101, 102, 103, 104 can still be utilized to fulfill Tier 1 HIST requirement. 

300-level Honors Capstone:  Moral Responsibility

Upon successful completion of HONR 301 Honors Capstone: Moral Responsibility, the Core requirement for Ethical Knowledge and Inquiry (3 credit hours) is waived.

Be aware students will be required to fulfill the Quantitative Knowledge and Inquiry (3 credit hours); Historical Knowledge and Inquiry Tier 1 (3 credit hours); Philosophical Knowledge and Inquiry Tier 2 (3 credit hours); Scientific Knowledge and Inquiry Tier 1 (3 credit hours); Societal and Cultural Knowledge and Inquiry Tier 1 (3 credit hours); and Theological and Religious Knowledge and Inquiry Tier 2 (3 credit hours) outside of the Honors Program.

Engaged Learning in the Honors Program

All Honors students are required to take 3 credit hours of Engaged Learning coursework.  These courses provide a core learning experience integrated into a course that engages students in learning outside the classroom.  You can find more information on the Engaged Learning page. 

HONR 290 Literacy Center does not satisfy any requirements within the Honors program, but it can be taken to satisfy the Engaged Learning requirement.
