Area Goal: This Core Area of Inquiry will invite students to explore literary traditions and expressions.
Area Objectives: Through these courses, students will examine how literary expression manifests in different types of texts. The kinds of texts students can study are expansive: e.g., poems, plays, novels, stories, memoirs, essays, magazines, newspapers, and more in print and online formats. Students have opportunities to select courses that cover literature from a range of time periods, places, perspectives, cultures, languages, identities, and social positions that have generated and continue to generate rich literature. This range extends across literatures produced in a variety of languages by the many cultures and social groups of Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania as well as the diasporas and migrations within and between these regions. Students will explore the forms that shape literary expressions; the creative processes that produce them; the concepts and terms that facilitate their interpretation; and the cultural, social, linguistic, and historical contexts in which they are produced.
