The Certificate in Social Justice and Social Enterprise is a 15 credit hour graduate certificate designed for those interested in professional formation to enhance their work for social justice and in social organizations but for whom a full graduate degree may not be necessary.
This program is especially suited to those who have completed an undergraduate degree and wish to deepen their understanding of social justice and students in graduate programs who wish to add an advanced graduate certificate in social justice and social enterprise. The Certificate is also well suited for professionals whose work in the field would be enhanced by the well-rounded theoretical and practical formation afforded by this program.
For students who complete this Certificate and return to pursue the full MA in Social Justice (36 credit hours) within 8 years of graduating, all the credit hours applied to this Certificate will count toward the MASJ. This Certificate can be applied toward to the requirements of any MA degree at IPS, in whole or in part depending on the requirements of the MA in question.
CURRICULUM
The Certificate in Social Justice and Social Enterprise requires students to complete five courses (15 credit hours). Two of these courses will be taken at the Institute of Pastoral Studies: IPS 610 Foundations of Social Justice and one IPS elective course. The IPS elective will be chosen from among the core courses in the social justice curriculum. Two of the required courses will be taken at the Quinlan School of Business (QSB): MGMT 485 Social Enterprise and one QSB elective course. The QSB elective will be chosen in consultation with their academic advisor. The fifth and final course required for the Certificate is an elective and can be completed at either the QSB or the IPS. This will discerned in conversation with their academic advisor and according the student’s experience, context, and interests.

By completing the Certificate in Social Justice and Social Enterprise, students will be able to demonstrate:
- An understanding of philosophical and theological approaches to justice with a special focus on the Catholic social tradition as these approaches address global, post-modern contexts.
- how to create social value by business means;
- how to fund, start, sustain, scale, and measure the impact of an entrepreneurial social venture.
